Faces of the Park: Portraits of Belonging
Olana Light - Victoria Park Portsmouth
The Reviving Victoria Park project began in December 2021, following extensive local engagement.
Thanks to the support of National Lottery players, we were awarded £2.4 million from the National
Lottery Heritage Fund to restore and revitalise the People’s Park.
Running until March 2026, this four-year initiative is transforming Victoria Park into a more inclusive
and welcoming space. With new buildings and infrastructure designed to complement the park’s
heritage, and a vibrant programme of events and activities, we’re creating opportunities for
wellbeing, learning, and community connection - all supported by a dedicated team of volunteers.
During the consultation phase, many people expressed that the Guildhall Walk railway entrance felt
unwelcoming. In response, Portsmouth City Council invited local artists to submit proposals for a
temporary art and lighting installation to enhance this gateway. Olana Light was selected to create a
series of artworks for the railway arches, which will be displayed for up to two years. Her work not
only transforms the space but also reflects the community’s role in shaping the park’s future.
Faces of the Park is a celebration of the people and communities who have shaped and supported
the Reviving Victoria Park project. Through a series of creative workshops led by artist Olana Light,
participants crafted headpieces using natural materials - many gathered from the park itself - to
wear in portraits that reflect their identity and connection to this cherished green space.
We worked with Trash Arts Productions, Solent Original Walks, Wellbeing Walk volunteers, Green
House users, and local businesses with ties to the park. Their involvement helped bring this project
to life, capturing the spirit of belonging and community that defines Victoria Park.
The portraits featured in Faces of the Park honour the individuals and organisations who have
contributed to the revival of Victoria Park - a living tribute to creativity, collaboration, and the
power of belonging.
